Rating (out of 5): 1

Embelia, particularly Embelia ribes (commonly known as false black pepper or Vidanga), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Siddha. Its primary traditional applications include use as an anthelmintic (for expelling parasitic worms), digestive aid, and for treating skin diseases. There are also claims of its use for general fever and as a tonic for overall health. However, specific documentation of Embelia being used for influenza or flu-like illnesses is limited and anecdotal at best. The herb has been traditionally valued for its purported ability to "balance" the body and remove toxins, which could be contextually extended to supporting the body during various illnesses, including respiratory infections.

On the scientific front, a few in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts from Embelia ribes possess antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, but direct evidence of antiviral activity against influenza viruses is lacking. No clinical trials or robust scientific studies have evaluated its efficacy in preventing or treating influenza in humans. Thus, while there is traditional use of Embelia for general illness, its application specifically for influenza is not well-established in either traditional texts or modern research.
