Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

English Ivy (Hedera helix) has a long history of traditional use, particularly in European herbal medicine, as a remedy for respiratory ailments. Its use for influenza specifically is based more on tradition than strong scientific validation. Traditionally, English Ivy leaf extracts have been used to relieve symptoms such as cough and congestion associated with upper respiratory tract infections, including those that can occur during influenza. Modern phytotherapy sometimes includes ivy extracts in cough syrups or expectorants, owing to their saponin content, which is believed to help thin mucus and ease cough.

However, scientific studies supporting the efficacy of English Ivy for treating influenza itself are limited. Most clinical research has focused on its effects in bronchitis and productive cough, not influenza viruses. Some studies suggest that ivy extracts may provide symptomatic relief for cough, but there is insufficient evidence to confirm a direct antiviral effect against influenza or to support its use as a primary treatment for the flu. As such, its use for influenza remains rooted in tradition, and it should not replace evidence-based antiviral therapies or vaccines. More rigorous clinical trials are needed to determine its efficacy and safety in the context of influenza.
