Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Garlic pear (Crateva religiosa), also known as sacred garlic pear, is primarily used in traditional systems of medicine, particularly Ayurveda and other South Asian healing practices. While it has a long history of use for various ailments such as urinary disorders, inflammation, and liver problems, there is limited documentation of its direct use for influenza specifically. In traditional practice, the plant’s roots, bark, and leaves are considered to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which might explain its application in general fevers and respiratory complaints, but not specifically influenza.

Scientific studies on Crateva religiosa have investigated its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects in vitro and in animal models. However, there is currently no robust clinical or laboratory evidence demonstrating efficacy against the influenza virus or supporting its use in treating influenza in humans. Thus, while its use might be justified by tradition for general illnesses, the evidence for influenza is extremely limited and not directly validated by science at this time.
