Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Iridoids are a class of secondary metabolites found in various medicinal plants, including Valeriana officinalis, Gentiana lutea, and Harpagophytum procumbens. The use of iridoid-containing plants for the treatment of influenza and related respiratory illnesses has a basis in traditional medicine practices, particularly within herbal remedies used in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys indicate that some iridoid-rich plants, such as Gentiana species, have been used in traditional preparations to manage symptoms like fever and malaise that are associated with influenza.

Scientific research on the direct antiviral effects of iridoids against influenza viruses is limited. While some studies suggest that certain iridoids possess general anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, robust clinical data supporting their efficacy specifically for treating influenza in humans are lacking. Preclinical studies have occasionally shown that iridoid glycosides can modulate immune responses or inhibit viral replication in vitro, but these findings have not translated into established therapies or well-supported recommendations for influenza treatment. Therefore, while iridoids are used traditionally for influenza and related symptoms, the evidence base is modest and primarily rooted in historical rather than contemporary scientific validation.
