Lentinula edodes mycelia, commonly known as the mycelium of the shiitake mushroom, has been studied for its potential to support immune function and combat viral infections, including influenza. The primary bioactive compound of interest is lentinan, a β-glucan polysaccharide found in shiitake mycelium and fruiting bodies. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that lentinan can modulate immune responses by enhancing the activity of macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, and the production of cytokines, all of which are relevant in the body’s response to viral infections like influenza. Some research has demonstrated that lentinan can inhibit the replication of influenza viruses in cell cultures and may reduce the severity of symptoms in animal models. However, direct clinical evidence in humans for the efficacy of Lentinula edodes mycelia or its extracts specifically against influenza is limited. Most human studies have focused on general immune enhancement or use in oncology, rather than direct antiviral effects against influenza.
