Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oldenlandia (commonly referring to Oldenlandia diffusa) is primarily used in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), to support the treatment of various infectious and inflammatory conditions, including influenza-like illnesses. In TCM, Oldenlandia is believed to have "heat-clearing" and detoxifying properties, and it is included in herbal formulas aimed at reducing fever, sore throat, and other symptoms commonly associated with influenza. Historical texts and modern herbal compendiums document its use for these indications, but most references are anecdotal or based on empirical tradition rather than rigorous scientific investigation.

Scientific studies on Oldenlandia have largely focused on its potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. While some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of Oldenlandia possess antiviral activity against certain viruses, there is limited direct evidence specifically supporting its efficacy against influenza viruses in humans. Clinical trials validating its use for influenza are lacking or of very low quality. Therefore, the use of Oldenlandia for influenza remains supported mostly by traditional usage, with minimal scientific substantiation.
