Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Onosma bracteatum, commonly known as "Gaozaban" or "Golden Drop," is traditionally used in Unani and Ayurvedic medicine for the management of respiratory ailments, including influenza-like illnesses. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its use as a demulcent, expectorant, and febrifuge, supporting its application in treating cough, fever, and throat irritation associated with influenza. The plant is often included in polyherbal formulations designed to alleviate symptoms of colds and flu.

Despite its longstanding presence in traditional medicine, direct scientific evidence supporting the specific efficacy of Onosma bracteatum for influenza remains limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of the plant possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically benefit patients with viral respiratory infections. However, clinical trials specifically investigating its effects on influenza or influenza viruses are lacking as of the most recent literature up to 2024. Thus, while traditional use is well-established, rigorous scientific validation for this indication is insufficient, and its use for influenza should be regarded as adjunctive and guided by historical rather than modern clinical evidence.
