Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Polygonatum, commonly known as Solomon's seal, is a genus of plants used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other herbal traditions. In these systems, Polygonatum species (notably Polygonatum sibiricum and Polygonatum odoratum) are primarily valued as tonics for nourishing yin, moistening dryness, and supporting lung and kidney health. Within TCM, these properties have led to their inclusion in formulas intended to support recovery from respiratory ailments, such as coughs, sore throats, or general weakness following illnesses like influenza. However, their use is not specifically targeted at treating influenza itself but rather at supporting the body’s recovery and resilience.

There is very limited scientific research directly evaluating Polygonatum’s efficacy against influenza virus or its symptoms. A handful of laboratory studies have explored the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects of Polygonatum extracts, but these do not provide direct evidence for treating or preventing influenza in humans. Most references to Polygonatum for flu in the modern era cite traditional use and empirical observation rather than clinical trials or well-established pharmacological studies.

In summary, the use of Polygonatum to support or treat influenza is justified primarily by tradition, with very limited scientific validation. Its role is more supportive and general, rather than as a direct antiviral remedy for influenza.
