Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Aloe vera has a long history of use for treating injuries, particularly skin injuries such as burns, cuts, and abrasions. Modern scientific research provides moderate evidence to support its effectiveness, especially for minor burns and wound healing. Aloe vera gel contains compounds such as polysaccharides, glycoproteins, vitamins, and antioxidants, which are believed to contribute to its healing properties. Several clinical studies have shown that topical application of aloe vera gel can accelerate healing time for first- and second-degree burns, reduce inflammation, and decrease pain associated with skin injuries. For example, a systematic review published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (2007) found evidence that aloe vera may improve wound healing compared to conventional treatments in some cases, though study quality and results varied. The gel’s moisturizing and antimicrobial effects also help create a favorable environment for tissue repair. However, evidence for its benefits on other types of injuries, such as surgical wounds or chronic ulcers, is less consistent.

While aloe vera is widely used in traditional medicine, its use for injuries is supported by a moderate level of scientific evidence. Most experts consider it safe for topical use on minor wounds, but caution against applying it to deep wounds or severe burns without medical supervision. Further well-designed clinical trials are needed to strengthen the scientific basis for its broader use in injury treatment.
