Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aucubin is an iridoid glycoside found in several medicinal plants, most notably Plantago species. While aucubin has a long history of use in traditional medicine via plant extracts, modern research has begun to elucidate its potential mechanisms for supporting injury recovery. Several preclinical studies, primarily in vitro and in animal models, have demonstrated that aucubin possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and tissue-protective properties. For example, research has shown that aucubin can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulate oxidative stress, both of which are relevant to tissue injury and healing processes. Additionally, some studies report that aucubin can promote wound healing by enhancing fibroblast proliferation and migration, as well as accelerating re-epithelialization in animal models.

However, while these findings are promising, there is a notable lack of robust clinical evidence in humans confirming the efficacy of aucubin for injury treatment or recovery. Most available data are preclinical, and further research—including well-designed human clinical trials—is needed to establish its safety and effectiveness for this purpose. Overall, the use of aucubin for supporting injuries is justified by preliminary scientific studies, but the strength of evidence remains low to moderate (rated 2 out of 5), mainly due to the absence of clinical trials.
