Bai Ji (Rhizoma Bletillae) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) primarily for its properties in stopping bleeding, reducing swelling, and promoting the healing of wounds and injuries. Historical TCM texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and later materia medica, describe Bai Ji as effective in treating traumatic injuries, especially those involving bleeding, ulcers, and skin wounds. Its astringent and hemostatic properties are attributed to its ability to "bind" tissues and stop bleeding, while also promoting tissue regeneration and reducing inflammation. Traditional preparations include powders and topical applications for cuts, abrasions, and even burns.
Modern pharmacological studies are limited, but some in vitro and animal research has suggested that Bai Ji may enhance the proliferation of fibroblasts and have anti-inflammatory effects, which could support wound healing. However, high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the bulk of supporting evidence comes from historical use and case reports rather than rigorous scientific validation. Thus, the use of Bai Ji for injuries is justified primarily by tradition, with a moderate level of supporting evidence from traditional practice and limited preclinical research, but not from robust clinical trials.
