Blepharis, a genus of plants in the Acanthaceae family, has been used in traditional medicine across Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. Ethnobotanical surveys indicate that certain species, such as Blepharis edulis and Blepharis linariaefolia, have been applied topically to wounds, cuts, or injuries. Traditional healers have often used crushed leaves, poultices, or extracts to promote healing and reduce inflammation at injury sites. The rationale for these uses typically centers on the belief in the plant's antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, as observed in folk practices. However, scientific validation for Blepharis in wound healing or injury treatment is limited. A few in vitro studies suggest that extracts from some Blepharis species possess antioxidant or antimicrobial activities, which could theoretically benefit wound healing. Still, no robust controlled clinical trials or animal studies directly confirm efficacy for injury treatment. The evidence, therefore, remains largely anecdotal and rooted in traditional use rather than in rigorous scientific evaluation. As a result, while Blepharis enjoys a historical reputation for supporting injury healing in certain cultures, the overall quality of evidence remains low, justifying a modest rating.
