Calendula contains several biologically active compounds, including flavonoids, triterpenoids, and carotenoids, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties in preclinical studies.
Clinical trials, though generally small and of variable quality, suggest that calendula ointments or creams can promote faster healing of minor wounds, reduce inflammation, and decrease the risk of infection. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine (2013) found that calendula significantly improved healing in patients with venous leg ulcers compared to standard care.
