Clerodendron (commonly referenced as Clerodendrum in scientific literature) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia and Africa, for a variety of ailments, including injuries such as wounds, bruises, and inflammation. Ethnobotanical surveys report that various species, such as Clerodendrum inerme and Clerodendrum serratum, are used topically in poultices or decoctions to promote healing of injuries and alleviate pain. The traditional justification centers on its reputed anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties, which are thought to assist in wound healing and reduction of swelling.

From a scientific standpoint, preliminary studies have identified the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and phenolics in Clerodendron species, which may underlie some of the observed pharmacological effects. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, but these are limited in number and quality. There is a lack of robust clinical trials or systematic reviews evaluating Clerodendron for injury treatment in humans, so the evidence does not surpass traditional justification. Therefore, its use for injuries is best described as primarily traditional, with limited preliminary scientific support that does not yet validate its efficacy.
