Deer velvet, which refers to the soft, growing antler tissue harvested from deer, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other East Asian practices. It has been used for centuries as a tonic to promote healing, enhance vitality, and support recovery from injuries, including bone fractures and wounds. The rationale in traditional systems rests on the belief that deer velvet contains "life essence" and nutrients that can support tissue regeneration and recovery.
However, modern scientific research on deer velvet's efficacy for injury healing is limited and inconclusive. Some animal and in vitro studies have suggested that deer velvet contains growth factors, such as insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and amino acids that could theoretically aid tissue repair. Yet, clinical trials in humans are sparse, small, and methodologically weak. Most available studies have not demonstrated significant benefits over placebo for injury healing or recovery, and systematic reviews have concluded that there is insufficient evidence to recommend its use for this purpose.
