The use of the orchid tree (genus Bauhinia, which includes species such as Bauhinia variegata and Bauhinia purpurea) to support or treat injuries is primarily justified by traditional medicine practices, especially in Ayurveda and various folk medicine systems in South and Southeast Asia. Historically, different parts of the orchid tree, especially the bark, leaves, and flowers, have been applied as poultices or decoctions for their purported anti-inflammatory, astringent, and wound-healing properties. These uses stem from centuries-old ethnomedical practices rather than robust scientific validation.
Scientific studies on Bauhinia species are limited, particularly regarding their efficacy in treating injuries such as wounds, sprains, or bruises. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Bauhinia species possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities, which could theoretically contribute to wound healing.
