Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is a biodegradable and biocompatible copolymer widely used in biomedical applications, particularly for supporting and treating injuries. The scientific justification for its use is strong, as PLGA has been extensively investigated for tissue engineering, controlled drug delivery, and wound healing applications. Its versatility stems from its ability to degrade into lactic acid and glycolic acid, both of which are naturally metabolized by the body, minimizing toxicity and adverse reactions.

Numerous preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated that PLGA scaffolds can support cellular attachment, proliferation, and differentiation, thereby enhancing tissue regeneration for bone, cartilage, nerve, and soft tissue injuries. For example, PLGA-based scaffolds are used to deliver growth factors and stem cells directly to injury sites, promoting faster and more effective healing. In orthopedic and dental applications, PLGA membranes and implants are employed for guided tissue regeneration and as carriers for antibiotics or other therapeutic agents.

The evidence base includes in vitro studies, animal models, and some human trials, particularly in the context of bone and soft tissue repair. Regulatory agencies have approved several PLGA-based medical devices, further supporting its efficacy and safety. However, while the evidence is robust for certain applications, ongoing research aims to refine formulations and delivery systems for even better clinical outcomes.
