Sangre de Grado (also known as Dragon's Blood, derived from the sap of the Croton lechleri tree) has a long history of traditional use in South American medicine for the treatment of injuries, particularly skin wounds, cuts, and abrasions. Beyond its traditional applications, there is a growing body of scientific evidence supporting its efficacy in wound healing. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that Sangre de Grado sap possesses antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, which are beneficial for managing wounds. Laboratory and animal studies suggest that the sap accelerates wound closure, promotes tissue regeneration, and reduces infection rates. The active compounds, such as proanthocyanidins and taspine, are believed to contribute to these effects by stimulating fibroblast migration and collagen formation.
Small clinical trials and case reports in humans have shown that topical application of Sangre de Grado can help reduce pain, speed up healing, and prevent infection in minor skin injuries. However, large-scale, well-controlled human studies are still limited, so while the evidence is promising, it is not yet definitive or universally accepted in mainstream medicine. Overall, the use of Sangre de Grado for injuries is supported by both tradition and a moderate level of scientific validation, primarily from in vitro and animal studies, with emerging yet limited clinical data.
