Evidence supporting the use of: Serratiopeptidase
For the health condition: Injuries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Serratiopeptidase is a proteolytic enzyme originally isolated from the bacterium Serratia marcescens. It has been widely used in parts of Asia and Europe, particularly in Japan and India, as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent for the management of injuries, post-surgical swelling, trauma, and related conditions. The rationale behind its use is its purported ability to break down abnormal or "dead" proteins at sites of inflammation, thereby reducing swelling and facilitating the healing process.
Scientific evidence supporting serratiopeptidase for injury-related inflammation and pain is limited and mixed. Some small clinical trials and studies have suggested that serratiopeptidase may reduce swelling, pain, and recovery time after trauma or surgery, possibly by enhancing the breakdown of inflammatory mediators and fibrin deposits. However, these studies often have methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes, lack of proper controls, or short follow-up periods.
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses have generally concluded that while there is some promising evidence, it is not robust enough to strongly recommend its routine use for injury healing or inflammation management. The overall quality of the evidence is considered low to moderate. International guidelines do not endorse serratiopeptidase as a first-line therapy for injuries. Further high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to clarify its efficacy and safety profile in this context.
In summary, serratiopeptidase's use for injury support is based on weak scientific evidence, with some traditional use in specific regions. It is not universally recognized or recommended in mainstream medical practice for injuries.
