Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitamin D is scientifically recognized for its important role in bone health and musculoskeletal function, which underpins its use in supporting the recovery from injuries, particularly those involving bone and muscle. Vitamin D facilitates calcium absorption in the gut and maintains adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations, promoting normal bone mineralization and preventing hypocalcemic tetany. Its deficiency is associated with impaired bone healing, increased risk of fracture, and muscle weakness.

Multiple studies have observed that individuals with low vitamin D levels tend to have slower or impaired healing following fractures and other skeletal injuries. Some clinical trials suggest that vitamin D supplementation may support bone healing and reduce the risk of complications in patients with deficiencies. For example, a 2021 systematic review in Medicine (Baltimore) indicated that vitamin D deficiency negatively affects fracture healing, and supplementation can be beneficial, especially in deficient populations.

However, while observational data are strong, evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is somewhat mixed, with some studies showing clear benefits, and others showing limited or no effect in vitamin D-replete individuals. There is also increasing research into vitamin D’s role in muscle function and injury prevention, with some evidence suggesting it may reduce risk of muscle injuries and improve recovery.

In summary, vitamin D’s use in injury support, especially for bone injuries, is scientifically justified, with moderate-quality evidence supporting supplementation in deficient individuals, but limited benefit in those with adequate levels.
