Albizia julibrissin, commonly known as silk tree or mimosa, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries, primarily as a remedy for mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. In TCM, both the bark (He Huan Pi) and the flowers (He Huan Hua) are prized for their calming properties and are included in formulas designed to 'calm the spirit' and support restful sleep. Contemporary pharmacological research has identified several compounds in Albizia julibrissin, such as saponins and flavonoids, which may have sedative and anxiolytic properties based on animal studies. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans to confirm its efficacy for insomnia specifically. The majority of evidence for its use in managing insomnia is anecdotal or based on historical usage in herbal medicine systems. While animal models suggest possible mechanisms—such as modulation of neurotransmitter systems—these findings have not yet been translated into large-scale human studies. Therefore, the use of Albizia julibrissin for insomnia is justified primarily by traditional usage, with limited scientific support to date.
