Evidence supporting the use of: Bacopa monnieri
For the health condition: Insomnia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bacopa monnieri, commonly known as Brahmi, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of neurological and psychological conditions, including insomnia. In Ayurvedic practice, Bacopa is considered a "medhya rasayana" (a rejuvenator of the mind and nervous system) and is frequently prescribed to promote calmness, improve sleep quality, and reduce anxiety, which can be a contributing factor to insomnia. Historical texts such as the Charaka Samhita mention its use for enhancing mental clarity and alleviating sleep disturbances.
However, scientific validation for Bacopa monnieri specifically for the treatment or support of insomnia is limited. While there are several studies indicating Bacopa’s anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and cognitive-enhancing effects, direct clinical trials assessing its impact on insomnia or sleep quality in humans are scarce. Some animal studies suggest Bacopa may have mild sedative effects and can modulate neurotransmitters involved in sleep regulation, but this evidence is preliminary and not directly translatable to established clinical efficacy for insomnia.
Therefore, while Bacopa is traditionally used for insomnia and related symptoms, scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for insomnia specifically remains limited, and more rigorous clinical studies are needed to confirm its benefits for this condition.
