Evidence supporting the use of: Barbed Skullcap
For the health condition: Insomnia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Barbed Skullcap (Scutellaria barbata) is primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), but not specifically for insomnia. In TCM, it is more commonly prescribed for its purported anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and anti-cancer properties, rather than as a sleep aid. The use of "skullcap" for insomnia primarily refers to Scutellaria lateriflora (American skullcap), which has a traditional reputation in Western herbal medicine as a mild sedative and nervine. There is some confusion in literature and product labeling between these two species. While American skullcap has some historical use for sleep disturbances, Barbed Skullcap’s role in supporting insomnia is, at best, tangential and based on broader TCM principles of "calming the spirit" or addressing underlying imbalances. There is limited scientific research directly examining Barbed Skullcap for insomnia or sleep disorders. Most available studies focus on its anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects. Thus, the association of Barbed Skullcap with insomnia is primarily rooted in tradition, with weak evidence supporting its efficacy for this condition. If used for insomnia, it is generally based on historical or anecdotal use rather than robust scientific validation.
