Evidence supporting the use of: Cannabidiol
For the health condition: Insomnia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cannabidiol (CBD) is increasingly used as a supplement to support sleep and treat insomnia. Scientific interest in CBD for sleep arises from its interaction with the endocannabinoid system, which is involved in regulating sleep-wake cycles. Small clinical studies and anecdotal reports suggest that CBD may help improve sleep quality, reduce sleep disturbances, and decrease the time it takes to fall asleep for some individuals. For instance, a 2019 clinical trial published in The Permanente Journal found that CBD improved sleep in about two-thirds of participants over a one-month period; however, the sample size was small and the study was open-label, limiting the strength of the evidence.
Experimental research suggests that CBD may reduce anxiety, which is often a contributing factor to insomnia. By potentially lowering anxiety levels, CBD may indirectly aid in falling and staying asleep. However, larger randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these effects. The available evidence is mixed, with some studies showing benefit and others showing no significant effect. Currently, the use of CBD for insomnia is considered supported by preliminary scientific evidence but not yet validated by large-scale, rigorous clinical trials. Therefore, the evidence rating for CBD’s use in insomnia is modest (2 out of 5).
