Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Cannabinoids, particularly cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), have been explored for their effects on sleep and insomnia. There is a growing body of scientific literature suggesting that cannabinoids may have a role in modulating sleep, though the evidence is mixed and often limited by study design, small sample sizes, and variability in cannabinoid formulations. Some randomized controlled trials and observational studies have reported that cannabinoids, especially products containing THC, can decrease sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep) and increase total sleep time. CBD, on the other hand, may have a more nuanced effect—lower doses can be stimulating, while higher doses may be sedating for some individuals.

A 2017 review in the journal Current Psychiatry Reports concluded that while there is some evidence supporting the use of cannabinoids for improving sleep, particularly in individuals with chronic pain or other comorbidities, the overall quality of evidence is low to moderate. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine does not currently recommend cannabinoids for treatment of insomnia due to insufficient evidence and concerns about side effects, dependency, and inconsistent product quality.

In summary, while there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of cannabinoids for insomnia, it remains preliminary, and further well-designed studies are necessary to establish efficacy, safety, and optimal dosing. Clinicians and patients should weigh potential benefits against risks and legal considerations.
