Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Jujubosides are saponin compounds primarily extracted from the seeds of Ziziphus jujuba (commonly known as jujube or sour jujube), which have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for calming the mind and treating insomnia. Scientifically, some animal and in vitro studies support the sedative and anxiolytic effects of jujubosides. In particular, jujuboside A and B have been shown in rodent models to prolong sleep time, decrease sleep latency, and modulate neurotransmitter systems such as GABAergic and serotonergic pathways, which are implicated in sleep regulation. These effects provide a plausible biological mechanism for their traditional use in insomnia. However, the clinical evidence in humans is limited. There are few well-designed, large-scale randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating jujubosides or jujube seed extracts for insomnia in humans. Most available studies are either preclinical or involve herbal mixtures, making it difficult to attribute effects specifically to jujubosides. Overall, while there is some scientific basis for their sedative effects and a strong tradition of use, the quality and quantity of clinical evidence do not yet robustly support their efficacy in treating insomnia. Thus, the current scientific evidence is rated as low to moderate (2/5).
