Evidence supporting the use of: Kratom
For the health condition: Insomnia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is traditionally used in Southeast Asia for its stimulant and sedative properties, depending on the dose. In low doses, it tends to have stimulating effects, while higher doses are reported to have sedative and calming effects, which is why some individuals have used it to address conditions like insomnia. However, the traditional use of kratom for insomnia is not as well-documented as its use for managing pain, fatigue, or opioid withdrawal. There are anecdotal reports and user testimonials suggesting that kratom, particularly in higher doses, may help some people fall asleep or relax before bedtime.
Despite these traditional and anecdotal uses, scientific evidence supporting kratom’s efficacy for insomnia is extremely limited. Most research on kratom has focused on its potential for dependence, withdrawal, and its effects on opioid receptors rather than its effects on sleep architecture or insomnia specifically. Some users report that kratom can disrupt sleep or cause insomnia, especially at lower or moderate doses. Due to the lack of rigorous clinical trials and the potential for side effects and dependence, medical professionals do not recommend kratom as a treatment for insomnia. Therefore, while there is some traditional and anecdotal use, the evidence supporting kratom for insomnia is weak and largely unsubstantiated by scientific research.
