Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Lesser speargrass (Stipagrostis obtusa or sometimes referring to Chloris barbata) is cited in some ethnobotanical texts as a traditional remedy for a variety of ailments, including as a sedative or for sleep-related issues such as insomnia. The use of lesser speargrass for insomnia appears to be grounded primarily in traditional medicine practices in certain cultures, particularly in parts of Africa and South Asia. However, documentation is sparse, and references are often found in compilations of local medicinal plant uses rather than in detailed pharmacological studies. There is little to no scientific research available that directly investigates the efficacy or active constituents of lesser speargrass for the treatment of insomnia. No clinical trials or robust animal studies have been published to validate its sedative or sleep-promoting properties. Therefore, while there is some historical precedent for its use in traditional settings, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for insomnia is weak, and no mechanistic studies or clinical data exist to substantiate these claims.
