Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lupulinum, also known as lupulin, is the yellowish, powdery substance found on the strobiles (seed cones) of hops (Humulus lupulus). Its use as a remedy for insomnia is primarily justified by traditional herbal and folk medicine practices. Historically, lupulin has been used for its mild sedative and hypnotic properties, with references dating back to the 19th century in European and American herbal pharmacopeias. Practitioners of traditional medicine have used hop pillows (containing hop cones rich in lupulin) and various lupulin preparations to help induce sleep and relieve restlessness.
While some early pharmacological studies noted mild sedative effects in animals and humans, the quality and quantity of evidence is limited. Modern clinical trials specifically evaluating lupulin for insomnia are lacking; most scientific research on hops and sleep focuses on whole hop extracts rather than isolated lupulin. The sedative effect is attributed to compounds such as methylbutenol and humulone, which are present in lupulin, but direct evidence supporting its efficacy in treating insomnia is insufficient by modern standards. Thus, the use of lupulin for insomnia is supported mainly by tradition, with only low-level scientific evidence.
