Moringa (Moringa oleifera) is primarily used in traditional medicine systems to support sleep and treat insomnia. In folk medicine, especially in regions of South Asia and Africa where moringa is native, various parts of the plant—including leaves, seeds, and roots—have been used as mild sedatives or remedies to promote restful sleep. The traditional rationale is often based on the belief that moringa’s rich nutrient content, including magnesium and tryptophan, contributes to relaxation and improved sleep quality. However, these uses are mostly anecdotal and have been passed down through generations rather than established through rigorous scientific study.
From a scientific standpoint, there is limited direct evidence supporting moringa’s efficacy in treating insomnia. While moringa leaves contain nutrients and phytochemicals (such as flavonoids and phenolic acids) that can have general health benefits and may indirectly support better sleep through stress reduction or improved overall nutritional status, controlled clinical trials specifically focused on insomnia are lacking. Some animal studies suggest potential sedative or anxiolytic effects, but these findings have not been consistently replicated or confirmed in humans.
