Evidence supporting the use of: Orange essential oil
For the health condition: Insomnia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sweet Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis) has been traditionally used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety, which are factors that can contribute to insomnia. Historically, various cultures have used citrus scents for their calming effects. The oil is commonly diffused or added to baths in traditional practices aimed at supporting restful sleep.
Scientific evidence directly linking Orange essential oil to the treatment of insomnia is limited. However, a few small studies suggest that orange oil inhalation may reduce anxiety and improve mood, both of which are relevant to sleep quality. For example, a 2017 randomized controlled trial found that inhaling sweet orange oil reduced anxiety levels in patients undergoing dental procedures. Another study noted a calming effect in animal models. Despite these findings, high-quality clinical trials evaluating its direct efficacy for insomnia are lacking.
Overall, the use of Orange essential oil for insomnia is mainly justified by traditional use and anecdotal reports. While it may contribute to a calming environment conducive to sleep, it should not be considered a primary or evidence-based treatment for insomnia.
