For the health condition: Insomnia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Oroxylum indicum, also known as Indian trumpet tree or "Shyonaka" in Ayurveda, has a history of use in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in South Asia. In Ayurveda, Oroxylum is classified among the "Dashamoola" group of ten roots, which are employed for their supposed anti-inflammatory and restorative properties. While Oroxylum is more commonly referenced for ailments such as fever, respiratory conditions, and inflammation, there are some references in traditional texts and ethnobotanical reports to its use in calming the mind or supporting sleep, often as part of polyherbal formulations. However, these mentions are relatively sparse and not central to its traditional use profile.
Regarding scientific evidence, research on Oroxylum indicum is limited, especially in the context of insomnia or sleep disorders. Some animal studies have investigated the plant's extracts for possible central nervous system effects, with a few suggesting mild sedative or anxiolytic activity. However, these findings are preliminary, not consistently replicated, and have not been validated in human clinical trials. No robust pharmacological or clinical data exist to support its efficacy for treating insomnia. Thus, while there is some traditional precedent for its use in calming or aiding sleep, the evidence base is extremely limited, and its use for insomnia cannot be considered scientifically validated at this time.
