Evidence supporting the use of: Terminalia
For the health condition: Insomnia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Terminalia species, particularly Terminalia chebula, have a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. In these systems, Terminalia is sometimes included in formulations intended to promote relaxation, support sleep, or address issues like anxiety that may be associated with insomnia. However, its primary traditional uses are more often related to digestive health, detoxification, and longevity. The use of Terminalia specifically for insomnia is mentioned in some traditional texts and herbal compendia, but these references are not as prominent or as well-established as for other herbs like Withania somnifera (ashwagandha) or Valeriana wallichii (Indian valerian).
Scientifically, there is very limited research directly evaluating the efficacy of Terminalia species for insomnia or sleep disorders. Most modern studies focus on antioxidant, antimicrobial, and gastrointestinal effects. There are some animal studies suggesting mild CNS (central nervous system) depressant or anxiolytic effects, but these are preliminary and not directly linked to clinical outcomes in insomnia. Therefore, while there is a traditional precedent for its inclusion in sleep-supporting mixtures, robust scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence supporting its use for insomnia is weak.
