Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast widely studied and used to support the intestinal system, particularly in the context of gastrointestinal health. Multiple clinical trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing the duration and severity of various types of diarrhea, including antibiotic-associated diarrhea, traveler’s diarrhea, and acute infectious diarrhea in both adults and children. The proposed mechanisms include restoration of normal gut flora, inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, and modulation of the immune response in the gut mucosa. In addition, S. boulardii has shown benefit in preventing recurrence of Clostridioides difficile infection and may help manage symptoms in inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome, though evidence in these areas is less robust.

Major international guidelines, such as those from the World Gastroenterology Organisation and the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, recognize S. boulardii as an evidence-based option for certain gastrointestinal indications. Adverse effects are rare, but caution is advised in immunocompromised individuals due to rare reports of fungemia. Overall, the scientific validation for its use in supporting the intestinal system is strong, especially in the management and prevention of specific diarrheal diseases.
