Evidence supporting the use of: Dragonhead
For the health condition: Irritability
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Dragonhead, also known as Dracocephalum species (such as Dracocephalum moldavica or Moldavian Balm), has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Asia and Eastern Europe. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and folk remedies, preparations from Dragonhead have been used to address symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, and restlessness. This use is generally based on the herb’s reputed calming and soothing properties, and its role in "clearing heat" and regulating the flow of Qi (vital energy), which are traditional concepts linked with emotional and mental disturbances such as irritability.
However, while some laboratory studies have explored Dragonhead for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and mild sedative effects, there is a lack of rigorous scientific studies specifically evaluating its efficacy for irritability in humans. The evidence supporting its use for this indication therefore remains primarily traditional, with only limited preclinical support and no robust clinical trials. Thus, the rating reflects that tradition underpins its use for irritability, with only modest modern evidence supporting possible calming effects.
