Evidence supporting the use of: European Vervain
For the health condition: Irritability
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
European Vervain (Verbena officinalis) has been traditionally used in European folk medicine for a variety of ailments, including as a mild sedative or calming herb. Historical texts and herbal compendiums have referenced its use for symptoms such as nervousness, anxiety, and irritability. These uses are primarily based on longstanding herbal traditions rather than rigorous scientific investigation. The herb was often prepared as a tea or tincture to help ease mental distress or promote relaxation.
However, scientific studies specifically investigating the effects of European Vervain on irritability are extremely limited. While some laboratory studies have suggested that extracts of V. officinalis may have mild anxiolytic or sedative effects in animal models, the evidence is preliminary and not directly related to irritability in humans. There are no well-controlled clinical trials supporting its efficacy for this specific condition. Thus, its use for irritability is supported by traditional herbal practice, but scientific evidence is lacking, and the overall quality and quantity of evidence is low.
