Evidence supporting the use of: Large-leaved linden
For the health condition: Irritability
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Large-Leaved Linden (Tilia platyphyllos) has a long history of use in European traditional medicine, particularly for its calming and soothing properties. Herbalists have recommended linden flower infusions for nervous tension, restlessness, and irritability for centuries. The flowers are commonly used in teas and tinctures aimed at promoting relaxation and alleviating mild symptoms of psychological stress, including irritability. The presumed calming effects are attributed to the presence of volatile oils, flavonoids, and mucilage contained in the flowers, which are believed to exert mild sedative and anxiolytic effects. However, while these traditional uses are well documented in ethnobotanical literature and pharmacopeias, scientific validation is limited. Only a small number of laboratory and animal studies have investigated the pharmacological effects of linden extracts, with some indicating possible sedative activity, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. No high-quality evidence exists specifically for the treatment of irritability, and authoritative monographs (such as those from the European Medicines Agency) recognize its traditional use for “the relief of mild symptoms of mental stress” rather than for irritability per se. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition, the scientific evidence remains modest, and linden should not be considered a proven remedy for irritability.
