Evidence supporting the use of: Relora® (proprietary)
For the health condition: Irritability
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Relora® is a proprietary blend of extracts from Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amurense. Its use for supporting or treating irritability is based on a small but growing body of scientific research. Several human clinical trials and animal studies suggest that Relora® may help reduce stress, anxiety, and associated symptoms such as irritability. The proposed mechanism involves modulation of cortisol levels and influence on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. For example, a randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in 2006 (Talbott et al.) found that Relora® supplementation led to statistically significant reductions in self-reported stress and improvements in mood, including decreased irritability, among moderately stressed adults. Another study (Kalman et al., 2008) reported reduced cortisol exposure and perceived stress in overweight adults, which may correlate with improvements in irritability. However, these studies typically use relatively small sample sizes and short durations, and most focus on stress or anxiety as primary outcomes, with irritability often being a secondary or exploratory endpoint.
Overall, while there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of Relora® for irritability, the body of research is limited and does not yet include large-scale, independent trials with irritability as a primary outcome. Therefore, the evidence is rated as 2 out of 5, indicating preliminary scientific support but a need for further validation.
