2′-Fucosyllactose (2′-FL) is a human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) that has been investigated for its role in modulating gut health, including its potential application in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The scientific rationale for using 2′-FL in IBS is based on its prebiotic properties, which means it can selectively stimulate the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, particularly Bifidobacteria. Since alterations in the gut microbiota (dysbiosis) are implicated in the pathogenesis of IBS, 2′-FL has attracted interest as a possible intervention to restore a healthy microbial balance.
Several small-scale, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials and pilot studies have explored the effects of 2′-FL or HMO mixtures in adults with IBS. Some studies have reported modest improvements in symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, and stool consistency. For example, a 2021 randomized trial (Iribarren et al., Gut Microbes) found that supplementation with 2′-FL and lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT) altered the gut microbiome and improved some self-reported IBS symptoms over 12 weeks. However, the overall body of evidence remains limited, with few large, high-quality trials and inconsistent results between studies.
In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence supporting the use of 2′-FL for IBS, the data are not yet robust or consistent enough for strong clinical recommendations. More extensive research is needed to clarify its efficacy, optimal dosing, and long-term safety in IBS patients.
