Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Agastache (commonly known as Korean mint or Agastache rugosa) has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in Chinese and Korean herbal practices. It is a key ingredient in certain traditional formulas such as Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San, which is used to address digestive complaints including nausea, bloating, and diarrhea—symptoms that overlap with those of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Its traditional use is based on the belief that Agastache can “dispel dampness” and harmonize the stomach.

However, direct scientific studies specifically evaluating Agastache for IBS are extremely limited or lacking. The available evidence is primarily in the form of historical use and traditional medicine texts. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in Agastache extracts, but there is no robust clinical trial data supporting its efficacy for IBS as understood in modern gastroenterology. Thus, while it is used in traditional medicine systems for digestive disturbances, scientific validation for its use in IBS is minimal. The evidence rating reflects reliance on tradition rather than confirmed efficacy from modern research.
