Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Black salt (also known as kala namak) has a long history of use in traditional South Asian medicine and cuisine, particularly within Ayurveda. Its application for digestive issues, including symptoms similar to those of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), is based largely on traditional beliefs rather than rigorous scientific studies. In Ayurveda, black salt is thought to stimulate digestive enzymes, alleviate flatulence, and reduce bloating, all of which are common complaints in IBS. The salt contains trace minerals and compounds such as sulfur, which impart its distinctive taste and aroma, and are believed to have mild laxative and carminative effects.

Despite these traditional uses, scientific validation for black salt’s efficacy in treating or supporting IBS is limited. A few small studies and anecdotal reports suggest that certain minerals and compounds in black salt may aid digestion or relieve gas, but these findings are neither robust nor specific to IBS. No high-quality, peer-reviewed clinical trials have demonstrated a significant benefit of black salt for IBS patients. Therefore, while black salt continues to be recommended by traditional practitioners for digestive comfort, its use for IBS should be considered as complementary and not as a substitute for evidence-based treatment.
