For instance, a 2012 double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that supplementation with L. gasseri OLL2716 reduced symptoms in patients with IBS, particularly abdominal pain and discomfort.

The rationale for its use is based on the ability of L. gasseri to modulate the gut microbiota, enhance intestinal barrier function, and reduce gut inflammation—factors believed to play a role in IBS pathophysiology. Additionally, L. gasseri’s production of lactic acid may help inhibit pathogenic bacteria and support a healthy gut environment. However, the overall quality of evidence is modest, with relatively few high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials. Most studies have small sample sizes and varying methodologies, which limits the generalizability of their findings.
