Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens is a probiotic bacterium commonly found in kefir, a traditional fermented milk drink. Its use in supporting or treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is primarily justified by recent scientific interest, rather than a long tradition of targeted use for this condition. Some studies suggest that L. kefiranofaciens may have beneficial effects on gut health due to its ability to produce exopolysaccharides (like kefiran) and modulate gut microbiota composition. A handful of animal studies and small human trials have shown that kefir, containing L. kefiranofaciens among other microbes, may reduce gut inflammation, improve intestinal barrier function, and alleviate some symptoms associated with IBS, such as bloating and abdominal discomfort. However, these effects cannot be attributed solely to L. kefiranofaciens, as kefir contains a complex mix of microorganisms. Direct clinical evidence specifically examining L. kefiranofaciens supplementation in IBS patients is limited. Most research involves the consumption of kefir as a whole food or the use of multi-strain probiotic mixtures. Therefore, while there is early scientific rationale for its potential benefits, high-quality, large-scale clinical trials focused on L. kefiranofaciens alone are lacking. The current evidence supports only a modest recommendation (rated 2/5), indicating the need for further research before it can be routinely recommended for IBS management.
