Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus sakei is a probiotic bacterium traditionally used in food fermentation, particularly in meats. Its use for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is not based on historical or traditional medicine, but rather on emerging scientific interest in its potential health effects. The evidence supporting its use in IBS is limited but present. A small number of randomized controlled trials and pilot studies have explored the benefits of L. sakei in improving IBS symptoms, such as bloating, abdominal pain, and bowel movement irregularities. For example, a 2019 Korean randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial found that supplementation with L. sakei improved some IBS symptoms over 8 weeks compared to placebo, with no serious adverse effects reported (PMID: 31416159). The proposed mechanisms include modulation of the gut microbiota, reduction of intestinal inflammation, and improvement of the gut barrier function. However, the number of studies is small, sample sizes are limited, and there is a lack of replication in larger and more diverse populations. While the scientific evidence is promising, it is not robust enough to warrant widespread clinical recommendation at this time. Thus, the rating is 2 out of 5, indicating preliminary scientific support but a need for more high-quality research.
