Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. Their use for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is backed by a growing body of scientific research, although the strength and consistency of evidence varies by probiotic strain, dose, and the specific IBS subtype. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggest that certain probiotic formulations can provide modest relief of global IBS symptoms, including bloating, abdominal pain, and flatulence. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of gut microbiota composition, improvement of intestinal barrier function, reduction of gut inflammation, and alteration of gut-brain signaling. However, not all probiotics are equally effective, and no single strain or combination has been universally recommended. The American College of Gastroenterology’s guidelines (2021) state that probiotics may improve overall symptoms and global response in IBS, but they also note the heterogeneity and methodological limitations of existing studies. As such, they suggest that probiotics might be considered for IBS patients who wish to try them, but emphasize the need for more rigorous research.
