Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that has been investigated for its potential benefits in managing symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The rationale for its use is based on its ability to modulate the gut microbiota, enhance intestinal barrier function, and reduce inflammation. Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have explored the effectiveness of probiotics, including S. boulardii, for IBS. However, the evidence specifically for S. boulardii in IBS is limited and somewhat mixed.
A few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggest that S. boulardii may reduce symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloating, particularly in diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D). For example, a 2011 RCT by Choi et al. found improved quality of life and reduced IBS symptoms in patients treated with S. boulardii compared to placebo.
