Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Saccharomyces, particularly Saccharomyces boulardii, is a probiotic yeast that has been studied for its potential benefits in managing symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The evidence supporting its use is moderate, with several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses indicating possible efficacy, especially for symptom relief such as bloating and stool irregularity. A 2022 systematic review in Frontiers in Medicine concluded that S. boulardii supplementation may improve global IBS symptoms and quality of life, though the effect sizes were generally modest and studies were often small or heterogeneous in design.

The proposed mechanisms of action include modulation of the gut microbiota, anti-inflammatory effects, and strengthening of the intestinal barrier. However, some trials have failed to show significant benefits compared to placebo, and studies using other species (e.g., Saccharomyces cerevisiae) are limited and less convincing.

Overall, while S. boulardii in particular shows promise and is included in some clinical guidelines as a probiotic option for IBS, the quality of evidence is moderate and further large, high-quality studies are needed. The use of unspecified Saccharomyces species other than S. boulardii is not well supported for IBS.
