Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Almond oil has a long history of traditional use for soothing and relieving itching and other mild skin irritations. In various systems of traditional medicine, including Ayurveda and Traditional Persian Medicine, almond oil has been used topically to moisturize dry skin, reduce inflammation, and calm itchiness associated with conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and general dryness. The oil is rich in fatty acids, particularly oleic and linoleic acids, which are thought to help restore the skin barrier and retain moisture.

Scientific studies on almond oil’s efficacy specifically for treating itching are limited. Some small studies and reviews have noted its emollient and anti-inflammatory properties, which may theoretically soothe pruritus (itching) secondary to dry skin. However, robust clinical trials directly evaluating its anti-itch properties are lacking. Most modern recommendations for almond oil in this context are based on its general ability to improve skin hydration and barrier function, rather than direct anti-pruritic effects. The evidence supporting its use for itching is therefore primarily traditional, with modest indirect scientific support for its general skin benefits. The overall quality of evidence is low, hence a rating of 2 out of 5.
