Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Alstonia scholaris (commonly known as the "Devil's tree") has a longstanding use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and folk medicine across India and Southeast Asia. The bark and leaves have been employed to address a variety of skin ailments, including itching (pruritus). Traditional practitioners have used poultices and decoctions derived from Alstonia scholaris for skin irritations, possibly due to its perceived anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. However, the direct scientific validation for its efficacy against itching is limited. While some studies have demonstrated that extracts of Alstonia scholaris possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, which may theoretically alleviate certain causes of itching, there is a lack of robust clinical trials or direct experimental evidence specifically confirming its antipruritic (anti-itch) effects in humans. Most references to its use for itching are rooted in ethnobotanical surveys and traditional medicinal texts rather than controlled scientific studies. Therefore, while the use of Alstonia scholaris for itching is justified by traditional practice, the current scientific evidence supporting this application is modest and largely indirect.
