Dendramine is the primary alkaloid found in Dendrobium nobile, a species of orchid. While Dendramine itself is not widely known as a standalone therapeutic agent, research has shown that extracts of Dendrobium nobile—which contain Dendramine—have antihistaminic and anti-inflammatory properties. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that Dendramine acts as an H₁ histamine receptor antagonist, comparable to the mechanism of classical antihistamines such as diphenhydramine. This antagonism can inhibit histamine-induced responses, including vasodilation and itching (pruritus). The use of Dendramine or Dendrobium extracts for itching is thus supported by mechanistic studies and preclinical evidence.

However, clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating Dendramine for pruritus are limited. The majority of available evidence comes from animal models of allergy or inflammation, where Dendramine administration reduced scratching behavior and other histamine-mediated effects. Traditional use of Dendrobium species in Chinese medicine is mostly centered on tonic and anti-inflammatory actions, but not specifically for itching. Therefore, while a scientific rationale exists and there is preclinical support, more robust human data are needed to fully validate its efficacy for itching.
